For Jimboomba resident Ada Banks, volunteering is a way of life.
Ada is one of the more than 6000 volunteers throughout Logan, who are being celebrated and rewarded at the upcoming Valuing Logan's Volunteers event.
The all-day celebration, held on Saturday May 8, is a chance for all active volunteers to get together and enjoy a day of entertainment and activities and to thank them for all the work they do for others in the area.
As a member of the Quota Club in Jimboomba for the past 18 years, and an active fundraiser for the Queensland Cancer Council for 14, Ada said the act of volunteering is rewarding in itself.
"Everything I have done has been a team effort, and I wouldn't have been able to raise the funds I have without the help of friends and family," she said.
"I really enjoy doing volunteer work, because I think it gives you a good balance in life - my husband and I own a business and our work life is very busy and stressful, so volunteering gives me that balance of doing something I enjoy.
"Everything we do, we have a good time, and we make it fun."
Ada and a group of friends started the Jimboomba branch of the Cancer Council, and they are extremely active fundraisers - the biggest event they have being the Relay for Life which raised over $50,000 last year.
She also regularly helps organise Daffodil Balls, Australia's Biggest Morning Teas and Run for a Cure events.
Her tireless efforts saw her receive the Mayor's Spirit of Logan Award earlier this year at Logan's Australia Day Awards.
"I was completely shocked firstly to be nominated, then to win," she said.
"I am not usually lost for words, but I certainly was that night.
"Volunteering is just something I love doing, it is good to get out and about in the community doing your bit, and I have made some wonderful friends along the way.
"Even selling daffodils and raffle tickets can make a difference, and sometimes just listening to people who need to talk is a big thing."
She said she thought the tightly-knit Jimboomba community was the perfect place to volunteer.
"We have lived in Jimboomba for 26 years and it is a community-minded place - I don’t think I could do that I do if I lived in a big city, it just wouldn’t be the same," she said. Valuing Logan's Volunteers will be held at Riverdale Park, Armstrong St, Meadowbrook, from 10am to 3pm on Saturday 8 May. Anyone interested in attending must be an active volunteer and register with Council before Friday 30 April.
The event will include a host of live entertainment, information stalls and activities.
